Alexa pronounces names incorrectly—here’s how to correct it – First of all, you will need to install the Alexa app on your smartphone. You have already had to use it to set up your Echo speaker, but if you have changed your phone in the meantime, you can download it again for and for free. From there, proceed to log in to the app and enter the settings. Follow these steps after that:
Tap More at the bottom right. Go to settings in the Alexa app. Select My profile, Tap on your profile or the one whose pronunciation you want to adjust. Select Edit name and pronunciation at the top of the screen. Go to the saved pronunciations (at the bottom of the screen). Listen to the wrong pronunciation—again (🙄). Select Let’s fix this, You can choose between one of the three options or type in a desired pronunciation here.
Change the settings in the More tab. © NextPit You can access the settings directly via the tab. © NextPit Select the entry directly under your name. © NextPit Manage the saved pronounciations here. © NextPit You will first have to listen to the incorrect pronounciation.
- © NextPit Customize the pronounciation by selecting “Let’s fix this.” © NextPit Choose from three different selections or customize your own choice.
- © NextPit Type the pronounciation using the keyboard.
- © NextPit Save your changes once you are happy with it.
- © NextPit Typing the pronunciation can be a little tricky, because Alexa recognizes certain phrases as abbreviations.
For example, my name is “Ben-jah-min,” where the “min” is pronounced as “minute.” That’s absolutely wrong, of course, unless my parents have kept me in the dark for almost 30 years that my name is actually pronounced as “Benjaminute.” By the way, you can change the pronunciation for any profile in your Alexa family.
How do I get Alexa to pronounce my name correctly?
Patricia Dunn replied 2 years ago I want Alexa to call me by my nickname that everyone uses, but she will only call me by my full first name. If you find a fix for this please let me know. Thank you Katherine Prescott Staff replied 2 years ago I definitely will! Mai Gallop replied 2 years ago My name is spelled Mai but it’s pronounced like the month of May so I just changed the spelling in my profile and now she says it right.
- This should work for you Patricia, just enter the name you want to use.
- Evie just try playing around with the spelling till she says it correctly.
- It’s worth a shot.
- Atherine Prescott Staff replied 2 years ago That is so smart!! Just yesterday I decided to change the spelling of my name in the app to “Evvie” and it worked! I am really happy that Alexa now knows who I really am–even if she can’t spell my name! I wish I’d seen Mai’s solution earlier, but all’s well that ends well.

Katherine Prescott Staff replied 2 years ago Nope, changing the spelling of your name will not impact your Amazon deliveries! Kaaren replied 2 years ago I went to the Alexa app, settings and Profile.
Found edit my name. Spelled it phonetically and it defaults back to my real name. What am I missing? Katherine Prescott Staff replied 2 years ago Hi Kaaren – That fix should work — what I would do is try a few different phonetic spellings and see if any of them work! Kydis Zellinger replied 2 years ago I’m having the same problems as Kaaren! Alexa keeps calling me “kai-dice” even though my name is pronounced “key-dis”! So I changed my name in the app to “Keydis” and even “Keydiss” but she still keeps saying “kai-dice”! It’s quite frustrating haha Kamairn replied 2 years ago I changed the spelling of mine but she keeps mispronouncing it when she says what account is signed in.
ugh I changed the spelling of my name to phonetic and then had to re-record my voice profile because that still had my old spelling attached to it. Give that a go! Janeece replied 1 year ago Mai Gallop, you are a rock star as far as I’m concerned! I had to play around with different vowels and even an apostrophe to make Alexa pronounce my name correctly, but I finally found the right combination that worked! (happy dance) I don’t know if this will interfere with being able to make purchases on my Amazon account from my device, but we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it.
Kaaren Sparkman replied 1 year ago Hi Kaaren! I am also a Kaaren. What spelling did you use? C Myers replied 12 months ago I never gave Alexa permission to be so familiar, and I patently refuse to purposely misspell my own name. I simply changed the field to, “Miss” and, thus, Alexa must use a title.
Now, if I can just get her to stay in Brief Mode as instructed. I get sick of hearing, “Getting that from YouTube” or, “Here’s what I found” every danged time. Don’t announce the results, just show them! Lysandra replied 5 months ago Hello everyone, I know I am late to this conversation. My name is Lysandra, but it’s pronounced Lasondra.
I was about to change the spelling of my name when I found that the Alexa app has fixed the issue. Instead of changing the spelling of your name, there is now a place where you can write in the way you want your name to be pronounced! It’s under Settings/Your profile & family/Your profile: under your name it says “edit name and pronunciation”.
- Tap & at bottom of screen: “go to saved pronunciation” Tap arrow next to your name.
- If that is not the correct pronunciation, tap “let’s fix that” Now you have 4 options; the last being able to phonetically spell your name.
- I hope this helps! slime.work replied 2 months ago This is iin all probability why the simpler game has superseded it in quite a few locations.

How do I get Alexa to pronounce Paul cut singer’s last name?
Using Phonemes to Change Alexa’s Pronunciation – We built the Dev Tips skill to help Alexa developers easily find answers to common questions. Every week we compile a list of answers to those questions and write concise answers for each one. One of the scenarios that we identified for Dev Tips was that our users would want to be able to get the contact information of our evangelists.
Perhaps they recently attended a Dev Days event, or read a blog post similar to this one and had additional questions for the author. We wanted to make sure that the Dev Tips skill could answer any of those questions about the Alexa evangelism team. This worked really well for most of us, which was surprising, because most people don’t pronounce “Blankenburg” correctly on their first try.
However, there were a couple of exceptions:
Paul Cutsinger – His last name should be pronounced “cut-sing-er,” but Alexa pronounces it as “cut-singe-er.” Andrea Muttoni – His name should be pronounced “on-dray-uh moot-tony,” but Alexa pronounces it as “and-ree-uh mutton-eye.”
To update these, we added a pronunciation property to our data for these answers. In Paul’s case, we took the simple route, which was to simply create his last name with two words instead of one: “Paul Cut Singer.” This is often an easy way to get Alexa to pronounce a word the way that you prefer, but it has its limitations.
For example, this spelling now works perfectly in English US pronunciations, but does not translate for Japanese pronunciations. There is a more specific and accurate way to modify pronunciations for Alexa, however. Using SSML, we can spell our word out using phonemes. Phonemes are phonetic pronunciations that you can assemble together to make words.
( You can read more about phonemes in our developer documentation,)
