If you push the “help” button, it will call the top 3 people, then call 911 if none are available. It works even if you are just in another room or in the yard and mom wants to talk to you. push the button, it calls and activates the speaker phone so she can talk to you. For this one implementation I have been required to purchase a smart phone, establish some sort of plan with a mobile service and pay the monthly rate, just for this one capability. I finally purchased an unlocked smart phone from Amazon ($66) and contacted US Mobile to provide a SIM card and fairly low cost monthly rates (~$10.00 per month) to install the Alexa app and change the Echo Connect to my smart phone, not my daughters. No telling what I’m going to run into there. I guess Amazon thought everyone had a smart phone of the correct version to use this system. I’ll now be stuck with a smart phone and carrier plan just to keep the Echo Connect Messaging up and running. Do you? | Report abuse Well, there’s an ugly hack that would enable this to work without a Smart phone.1) Set up an Android Emulator 2) Set up an Android device in the emulator 3) Install Google Voice on the virtual Android device 4) When you install Google Voice you get a phone number. When I did it, it was free. You could also purchase Apple’s iOS development tools and use the Apple iPhone emulator. How do you call someone on Alexa?

How to use your Amazon Echo to call someone’s mobile phone or landline – Echo-to-phone voice calls are possible on all Echo devices and most mobile and landline numbers in the US, UK, Canada and Mexico. Like Echo-to-Echo calls, connecting an Echo device and a phone is possible through simple voice commands.

Just say “Alexa, call (name of contact)” to call someone from your phone’s contact list.
You can also specify which number to call if there are multiple numbers – say a work and a mobile number – under one contact.
Simply say, “Alexa, call (name of contact) mobile” or “Alexa, call (name of contact) work.” If you’re wanting to call a number that’s not saved in your contact list, say “Alexa, call (phone number).” While Echo-to-phone calling is convenient and easy, it’s not limitless.

Emergency services numbers (such as 911), premium-rate numbers or toll numbers (such as 1-900 numbers) and most international numbers except for the US, UK, Canada and Mexico cannot be called through Echo devices.
