Can Alexa control my ecobee?
With Amazon Alexa Voice Service, you can control your ecobee devices with your voice using any Alexa-enabled device, including ecobee devices with Alexa Built-in, Amazon Echo, and Amazon Echo Dot, among others.
Which is better with Alexa ecobee or nest?
Ecobee or Nest? – A couple of defining features separate the Ecobee Smart Thermostat Enhanced and the Nest Thermostat. The Enhanced has a built-in sensor to track occupancy, as well as the option to buy separate remote temperature and occupancy sensors.
It also works with Siri voice commands. The Nest Thermostat, on the other hand, is a bit more basic. It doesn’t have a built-in sensor – or the option to expand its occupancy – and temperature-sensing range with a remote sensor (those sensor options are only available with the Nest Learning Thermostat and the Nest Thermostat E ).
If you want those occupancy-sensing features and the ability to adjust your thermostat with a Siri voice command, the Ecobee model makes more sense. However, if you want a more pared-down thermostat with some smart features but no Siri or remote sensor compatibility, Nest’s Thermostat is more than enough. Is ecobee always listening?
An easy-to-use smart thermostat – If you don’t want to talk to your thermostat—or you don’t want it listening—you can easily turn its microphone off. Every Ecobee model we’ve dealt with has been easy to install and easier to use, and this fifth-generation model is no different.
The company does suggest you take a quick compatibility test to make sure your HVAC system is compatible (you’ll find that ), but all Ecobee thermostats are generally compatible with a wide range of central HVAC systems, including heat pumps, two-stage set-ups, and other common configurations. A power extender kit (PEK) for systems without a C-wire is included in the box.
One other minor inclusion we appreciated was the surprisingly detailed paper manual covering the entire physical installation process—we much prefer printed documentation over relying on just the mobile app for instructions. Once you’ve wired it up, powered it on, and the new Ecobee has confirmed your HVAC setup, you need only inform the thermostat of your preferred temperature comfort ranges for when you’re at home, away, and sleeping.
- It will then establish a basic schedule that will automatically adjust as it learns both your daily activity and any tweaks you make while using the app, via Alexa commands, or by operating the thermostat itself.
- An onboard motion sensor and any remote sensors you deploy in other rooms (the kit comes with two) helps the thermostat determine which rooms are occupied.
Geofencing is also supported, so you can program the thermostat to automatically adjust target temperatures to avoid needlessly heating or cooling your home while you’re not in it.
Where is the ecobee 4 digit code?
Obtaining the Registration Code Tap the three horizontal bars on the bottom left corner of the ecobee screen to open the Main Menu. After completing these steps, the code will then be displayed on the thermostat’s screen. Write this code down. NOTE: Registration codes are valid for about one hour before they expire.
Why wont my ecobee connect?
Try power-cycling the ecobee and the router by unplugging the router and removing the ecobee from the wall.2.) Leave both the router and the ecobee off for about two minutes, then plug the router back in first.
How do I put my ecobee thermostat into pairing mode?
1) Gently pull the plastic tab on the back of the sensor.2) Look for a message on your ecobee’s screen. The 4-digit ID should match the 4-digit code on the back of your sensor. Tap Pair now to confirm pairing.
Does ecobee have a monthly fee?
$5/month on Standard Plan and $10/month on Complete Plan after free trial.
Can ecobee be hacked?
SRP wants you to have a smart thermostat. Here are the risks. One of Arizona’s largest utilities is encouraging customers to purchase smart thermostats that researchers say are vulnerable to hackers. The Salt River Project, which supplies water and power to more than 1 million people, is offering rebates and a bill credit to customers who buy these devices to control energy use.
- But and have raised red flags over the products.
- An SRP spokesman said the utility offers rebates on a variety of devices, but that the thermostats available in the marketplace on SRP’s website are managed by a third party.
- SRP has not been in communication with these companies about the recently publicized cyber security concerns,” spokesman Jeff Lane told the Arizona Mirror,
Smart thermostats have become popular with consumers and utilities alike as they can by regulating power usage during peak hours or when you’re not home. They do this by learning your habits and helping you find ways to reduce your energy consumption.
However, they often carry a hefty price tag. “Our intention is to help our customers save energy and money through special discounts and rebates on more than 200 energy-efficient and water-saving products,” Lane said. The thermostats get the “smart” moniker because they are able to connect to the internet and other devices.
These type of devices are often referred to as Internet of Things or IoT devices.
- The two main smart thermostats sold on SRP’s website with known vulnerabilities are the Nest,, and the EcoBee.
- “he complexity of the infrastructure in the Nest Thermostat provides a breeding ground for security vulnerabilities similar to those found in other computer systems,” according to researchers at the,
- These researchers found that when they were able to hack a Nest thermostat it could be used to “act as a beachhead to attack other nodes within the local network.”
- One of the devices that could be within that network is a smart meter, like those used by SRP and other utilities.
SRP dismissed concerns that the devices could infiltrate or harm smart meters, stating that the thermostats use WiFi which the meters would not communicate with. However,, And r in Virginia had findings similar to those in Florida.
- “merging platforms may fail to provide even bare-minimum security by allowing apps to arbitrarily add/remove other apps from the user’s smart home,” according to their study.
- , Nest denied reports of security breaches and blamed unnamed third parties.
- Nest did not respond to the Arizona Mirror’s request for comment.
- EcoBee has not made a public statement on security issues discovered by researchers and also did not respond to a request for comment.
- What did the researchers find?
- Smart devices have been an easy target of security researchers and hackers alike.
- Doorbells and even have been found to be easily manipulated because of lax security measures or loopholes.
In December, a San Francisco TV station reported threatening to kidnap their child. In January, another couple in California told the San Jose Mercury News that their Nest camera began, In both cases, Nest blamed data breaches on other sites. Thermostats are a fairly new target.
In January, a family in Illinois who had outfitted their entire house with a variety of Nest devices found their home under siege. A deep voice came over their speakers and their, The homeowner told reporters that he was unaware of additional security measures he could have taken such as two-factor authentication.
Two-factor authentication requires that you confirm a log-in either by phone, text or by an alternate email.
- The homeowner told local media that it became a “blame game” with Google and Nest blaming him and washing their hands of the situation.
- All of this has led many researchers to look into the vulnerability of these types of products, particularly Nest.
- “A Nest Thermostat, as demonstrated, may easily be compromised during transport, deployment, or by an attacker having access to it on a non-secure location,” Florida researchers said in a 2018 paper that demonstrated how they were able to hack into a Nest thermostat and gain control of its systems.
- “Suddenly, what was once a learning thermostat has been transformed into a spy that can not only report on the routines of the inhabitants of a certain home or office, but also on their cyber activities and provide a backdoor to their local network which could go unnoticed,”,
- Users of, another device sold by SRP,,
- The issues with lax security extends beyond the thermostats SRP is offering rebates on.
- One of the main programs used by the majority of smart meters has been found by researchers on multiple occasions to be so insecure that with a $30 purchase and some technical knowhow, you can see not only your water or electricity consumption but that of others.
- “Ironically, the hardest part wasn’t snooping on everyone’s power and water usage patterns in the neighborhood, it was trying to figure out which meter was his,” says in regards to a hacker who was curious about the smart meters in his area.

Is ecobee owned by Amazon?
Toronto-based smart home thermostat startup Ecobee is being acquired by Generac Holdings for $770 million, the companies announced Monday. The acquisition is expected to close in the fourth quarter. Ecobee CEO and founder Stuart Lombard told The Verge that he will stay on as CEO, and the company will operate as a subsidiary of Generac.
- It has no plans to move out of its Toronto office and has plans to “significantly” grow the office later this year, Lombard said.
- Ecobee was founded in 2007 and has expanded from the smart thermostats it’s known for, adding a voice-controlled home security camera that doubles as a home security system to its lineup.
Generac, based in Waukesha, Wisconsin, was founded in 1959 and makes backup residential and commercial power generators — the New York Times recently estimated Generac accounted for 75 percent of home generator sales in the US. Last month, the company opened a new plant in Trenton, South Carolina.
- Ecobee has competition in the smart thermostat space from established brands like Google and Amazon But Ecobee hasn’t released a new thermostat since 2019 and has lots of competitors in the smart thermostat space.
- They include established brands such as Google’s Nest and Honeywell (owned by Resideo) that are now undercutting it in price and newcomer behemoths like Amazon that just announced a $60 smart thermostat,
Ecobee’s advantage has long been flexibility with various smart home platforms, but it hasn’t had the resources available to its larger competitors. Last year, it postponed plans for a smart lighting line and laid off 10 percent of its staff, Generac, meanwhile, has bought several smaller companies over the past year and a half, acquiring Pika Energy, Enbala Power Technologies, and Neurio Technologies and combining them into an energy storage division.
Can I run ecobee without Internet?
The short answer is yes. Even without a Wi-Fi connection, your ecobee will still function as a traditional thermostat ; it will engage your equipment as needed and maintain your comfort set points.

How do I know if I have an ecobee 3 or 4?
Design – One thing that users love about the Ecobee 3 is the attractive design. Very minimalistic and modern, the Ecobee 3 features a black finish and smooth edges. The thermostat really blends into your home beautifully. With the Ecobee 4, Ecobee elected not to change much at all about the physical design of their product.
This “don’t fix what isn’t broken” philosophy has paid off, as both products continue to receive praise for their stylish and attractive design. The only differences between the two is that the Ecobee 4 features a speaker on top of the thermostat, allowing Alexa to speak. In addition to this speaker, The Ecobee 3 is also slightly bigger than its predecessor—109 x 109 compared to 100 x 100—and slightly heavier.
Otherwise, the two thermostats are identical. With either product, you’ll be getting a stylish, modern thermostat that makes a nice addition to the appearance of any home. Ecobee4 Design

Does ecobee work with Google or Alexa?
If you’re in the market for a smart thermostat, the Ecobee SmartThermostat with Voice Control and the Ecobee3 Lite Smart Thermostat are two solid options. These app-enabled thermostats offer intuitive technology so adjusting your home’s temperature is a breeze whether you’re at home or hundreds of miles away. Chris Monroe/CNET The $249 Ecobee SmartThermostat with Voice Control is the company’s most expensive smart thermostat. You can control it on your phone through the Ecobee app, but this model also has a built-in Amazon Alexa speaker. You can use Alexa voice commands to make phone calls, respond to texts and play your favorite music.
- You can also use the integrated Alexa to control your Ecobee thermostat, any other Alexa-powered devices.
- Ecobee’s SmartThermostat with Voice Control also plays well with other smart home ecosystems beyond Alexa.
- It’s compatible with Apple HomeKit, Google Assistant, IFTTT and Samsung SmartThings.
- This model works with Spotify and can pair with a Bluetooth speaker.
This thermostat has built-in temperature and occupancy sensors that automatically adjust your temperature based on whether you’re home or away. Your purchase also includes a remote sensor called a SmartSensor. You can place the sensor in any room of your home, where it can read the ambient temperature and detect occupancy. If you want a mix of savings and convenience, the Ecobee3 Lite might be the right fit for you. At $169, this thermostat is the most affordable offering from the company. The company gives you a variety of ways to monitor and make changes to your Ecobee3 Lite.
- You can control your home’s temperature with a tap, either on the thermostat itself – or through the Ecobee app.
- It also supports voice control and smart home integrations via Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, IFTTT, Samsung SmartThings and Android and iOS devices like the Apple Watch.
- If you plan to go on vacation, you can activate vacation mode to maximize its energy efficiency.
The system can help you detect rapid temperature variances, allowing you to react quickly to prevent your pipes from freezing. The thermostat also gets to know you. Each month, you receive a free energy audit complete with comparisons of your energy usage with others in your area.
- And with a seven-day scheduling function, the Ecobee3 Lite provides an affordable and convenient way to track your home’s heating and air conditioning.
- Unlike the SmartThermostat, this one doesn’t have a built-in occupancy sensor.
- It’s compatible with SmartSensors, but you don’t get one with your purchase.

It has no plans to move out of its Toronto office and has plans to “significantly” grow the office later this year, Lombard said. Ecobee was founded in 2007 and has expanded from the smart thermostats it’s known for, adding a voice-controlled home security camera that doubles as a home security system to its lineup.
Generac, based in Waukesha, Wisconsin, was founded in 1959 and makes backup residential and commercial power generators — the New York Times recently estimated Generac accounted for 75 percent of home generator sales in the US. Last month, the company opened a new plant in Trenton, South Carolina.
Ecobee has competition in the smart thermostat space from established brands like Google and Amazon But Ecobee hasn’t released a new thermostat since 2019 and has lots of competitors in the smart thermostat space. They include established brands such as Google’s Nest and Honeywell (owned by Resideo) that are now undercutting it in price and newcomer behemoths like Amazon that just announced a $60 smart thermostat,
Ecobee’s advantage has long been flexibility with various smart home platforms, but it hasn’t had the resources available to its larger competitors.
