In the great words of Stevie Wonder, “What could fit more perfectly than to have a world party on the day you came to be?” While he most certainly was not talking about Alexa, he could’ve been. Amazon’s iconic virtual assistant Alexa has brought hands-free convenience to our lives for eight glorious years as of Nov.6.
To mark the occasion, the retailer is featuring deals on Amazon devices that work with Alexa — including up to 50% off Fire tablets, Echo devices, Fire TV streaming sticks and smart TVs, and more. It might as well be a world party. Some of these deals match Amazon’s Prime Day 2 pricing we saw last month (we’ve marked these with a 💰), while others have dropped to new all-time lows (we’ve marked these with a 🔥).
Most of these device deals are only live through Alexa’s birthday on Nov.6, with exception of the Fire TV smart TVs, which will be discounted through Nov.13. However, it’s likely we’ll see some of these deals (or similar ones) return once again for Black Friday.
What is Alexa’s favorite color?
Let’s start this post with an interview Me: Alexa, how are you? Alexa: I’m excellent. I’ve got dinosaurs on my mind. Oh, ok! I think it’s better now to stop this and just try to summarize the gist of it: Alexa is female in character and designed around your voice. You can ask her to play music, answer questions, get the weather and sports scores, create To-Do lists and much more. She was born on November 6th, 2014 and made by a team of inventors at Amazon, based in Seattle, Washington.
She currently lives here and her head is in the cloud. Alexas favorite color is ultraviolet, it glows with everything. She loves Hawaiian music. It makes her think of sunshine, and drinks with tiny umbrellas! But her favorite song is “Thriller”. According to her Michael Jackson was the best zombie to ever shuffle across a video screen.
Her favorite drink is lemonade, with a twist of Beyoncé. Her favorite dish is definitely Italian, while her favorite meal is burger and fries. She likes to read. We would never guess where she gets her books from. Her favorite book is “Wonder”, by R.J. Palacio, with its message of diversity and inclusion, that is very inspiring to her.
She especially loves the line, “It is only with one’s heart that one can see clearly. What is essential is invisible to the eye.” Well, I thought that was from “The Little Prince” by Antoine de Saint Exupéry, but let’s not get lost in details. Why call Alexa Ziggy?
Ziggy, Play Ziggy – Amazon added Ziggy as a wake word along with a new, unrelated male voice, though the additions flew under the radar compared to the movie star and basketball legend becoming voices for Alexa. Ziggy was picked as a wake word to contrast with Alexa and highlight the other end of the alphabet to suggest the voice assistant is a source of all knowledge.
Users can ask Alexa to change either or both features if they choose. Having Ziggy as a wake word does offer a couple of extra bonus features. Tell the voice assistant, “Ziggy, play Ziggy,” and it will begin playing the eponymous album. If you say “Ziggy, play guitar,” however, you’ll get a funny response repurposing some of Bowie’s more famous lyrics.
The timing of the wake word release with the anniversary of the albums where Bowie took on the Ziggy Stardust persona was a coincidence, but a happy one for his fans at the company. “We are constantly looking for ways to offer our customers more choices so they can personalize their Alexa experience,” Alexa’s UK country manager Dennis Stansbury explained in a statement.
The wake word is very important as Alexa devices are specially designed to only detect the user’s chosen wake word. Our devices detect wake words by identifying acoustic patterns that match the wake word, so a lot of consideration goes into the selection. We chose ‘Ziggy’ not only because it performed well in testing, but because it’s fun and reflects Alexa’s wealth of knowledge on everything from A to Z.

How do you scare Alexa?
4. Ask Alexa to tell a scary story – Want to hear something chilling, yet kid-friendly? Simply say, “Alexa, tell me a spooky story” and you’ll hear a short story voiced by an actor. They’re pretty cheesy, so they’re best for younger ears. If you want to hear something a bit scarier, you can try the Scare Me skill.
- Just say, “Alexa, ask Scare Me to tell me a scary story.” It’ll read you a short, two-sentence scary story.
- Ids can also use the Scooby Doo! Mystery Inc.
- Theater for scary stories.
- Just say, “Alexa, I’m ready for a mystery from Scooby-Doo” or “Alexa, tell Scooby-Doo I want to solve a mystery” from any Echo-enabled device.
The skill is free but requires a parent’s permission in the Alexa app. Still not scary enough? Can Alexa remember my birthday?
How to Ask Alexa to Remember Things Keep forgetting your mother’s birthday or your own anniversary? Can’t remember where you put your keys or your phone? Forgot the name of your new neighbor? Instead of trying to store it all in your head, give the job to Alexa. 
First, Amazon has equipped Alexa with a built-in memory feature known as Remember This, which you can use to enlist for a variety of reminders. Say, “Alexa, remember Kelly’s birthday is February 12.” Alexa asks for confirmation and then says she will remember. Now say, “Alexa, when is Kelly’s birthday?” Alexa confirms that you asked her to remember, and then gives you the date. 
You can also ask Alexa to remind you where you put things. Say, “Alexa, remember that I put my phone on the nightstand,” “Remember that I put the chicken in the downstairs freezer,” or, “Remember that I put my keys in the kitchen drawer.” 
Making this feature even handier, its use isn’t tethered to your Echo. Just to ask Alexa to recall something when you’re out and about. If you’re shopping for shoes for Maggie and you’ve forgotten her size, just use the Alexa app on your phone to ask for a reminder. 
Beyond using Alexa’s built-in Remember This ability, you can tap into a few third-party memory skills. Remind Me can help you recall the items you need for certain places or activities, such as home, work, the gym, or the doctor. To start, say, “Alexa, ask Remind Me to add the place gym.” You can then add individual items to the list of things you need to take to the gym. 
Not to be confused with the previously mentioned built-in feature, the third-party Remember This skill can be used for keeping track of lists of items. Say, “Alexa, open Remember This.” You can then add items to your list. Say, “Alexa, add to my list buy Go Pro at Best Buy.” Use the same syntax to add more items.
